This is the week – Girlfriends’s Guide to Divorce, Season 3 is premiering on Wednesday night on the Bravo channel and I couldn’t be more excited! I don’t like to dwell or even talk much about divorce any more, but this show celebrates the freedom that can be experienced after divorce or generally as 40+ women and I love that the show has been successful and continues to be (there will be two more seasons!) I think it’s super important to show vibrant, slightly older women enjoying life, supporting each other and enjoying their freedom!
And I admit to enjoying the guilty pleasures of the Real Housewives various franchises but often those seem so completely far away from any reality that I will ever know – I guess that is what makes them fun. But Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce seems so much more relatable. It is Bravo’s first scripted series and I love that it’s done well and well done. According to the Los Angeles Times, “This one is smartly acted, crisply written and willing to address all manner of issues — marriage, betrayal, family economics, friendship, even the pitfalls of public domesticity — in gratifyingly complex ways.”
And as I’ve written previously, this show premiered Season 1 just when the thought of divorce entered my mind. Sometimes life and art intermingle. And this season they are using George Michael’s (RIP) “Freedom” as the theme song for the ads for the show. I have used “Freedom” as the ring tone on my phone since my ex walked out the front door. It’s such an appropriate anthem.
All we have to do, now,
Is take these lies and make them true somehow.
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you,
And you don’t belong to me.
Freedom;
You’ve gotta give for what you take.
Freedom;
You’ve gotta give for what you take.
I think the not belonging to anyone part is extraordinary. I think that being single is extraordinary. I think being over 40 is extraordinary. Life is no longer about doing what other people expect you to do, it is about living your own life, on your own terms. It’s about sorting out how to live, how to make money, how to spend money. It’s about spending time with people who support you and make your life better.
Freedom is reigning nearly 100% in my life and if it is not in yours, think about why that is. Is there anything you can do? A new job? A new living arrangement? A new passion? A new friend? A new fling? And sometimes when you make one change, it can evolve into other changes. Sometimes it’s about momentum. Think about what you can do right now to change the direction of whatever is not working in your life. We are over 40. Life is not getting longer.
And set your DVR for Wednesday night – 10/9c! Welcome back Abby and friends. I am excited to watch you celebrate your freedom.
